How can we create a just, healthy, and humane world? What is the path to developing sustainable energy, food, transportation, production, construction, and other systems? What's the best strategy to end poverty and ensure that everyone has equal rights? How can we slow the rate of extinction and restore ecosystems? How can we learn to resolve conflicts without violence and treat other people and nonhuman animals with respect and compassion? The answer to all these questions lies with one underlying system - schooling. To create a more sustainable, equitable, and peaceful world, we must reimagine education and prepare a generation to be solutionaries - young people with the knowledge, tools, and motivation to create a better future. This book describes how we can (and must) transform education and teaching; create such a generation; and build such a future.

The World Becomes What We Teach Educating a Generation of Solutionaries (Audible Audio Edition) Zoe Weil Diane Lehman Lantern Books Books

Zoe Weil exemplifies compassion and kindness, and this book is no exception. I loved every page, and even having read her other work and being someone who tries to lead a MOGO (most good, least harm) lifestyle, I found myself nodding along and learning new ways we can each make a difference. Should be mandatory reading for all those in the educational system.

REVIEW OF ZOE WEIL’S BOOK “The World Becomes What we Teach”

This is a deeply thoughtful book exploring the crux of what education needs to be in the 21st century and offers a model that, as a long term educator, I can see how timely and relative it is.

Starting with the most logical and no nonsense title of Weil’s book The World Becomes What We Teach the reader is encouraged to critically assess if, as a society, what we have been teaching during the last fifty years has optimally served all of earth’s inhabitants, and the planet. Our starting point is the last fifty years because prior to that what learning was required was to evolve from farm laborers into industrial factory workers. That goal has been accomplished and has subsequently become irrelevant.

Weil’s book explores wisely and deeply what type of K-12 grade education is relevant today. The author based the book’s structure on two of the questions offered by Warren Berger in his 2014 book, A More Beautiful Question. Berger's book offers a framework for learning, problem-identification, and problem-solving that revolves around three consecutive questions Why? What if? How?

Weil’s model of education answers the question - what does K-12 grade learning need to evolve into to meet the technological, ethical, individual, planetary, and sustainable demands of this time in history when the population has more than doubled, we are living in a globally linked world with resources being depleted, and waste is increasing at an alarming rate.

Through years of personal experience within education Weil recognizes that the current practice of focusing on preparing students for standardized tests increasingly disenfranchises students and teachers within the educational system. Weil advocates creating the environment for students, in age appropriate ways, to become conscious choice makers, “a generation of solutionaries” who can help solve the challenges that have arisen as a result of past and current thinking. Reading Weil’s book I am reminded of two of Einstein’s well known quotes, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them,” and “education is what remains after one has forgotten everything learned in school.”

I would like to see Weil’s model of education implemented in all K-12 grade schools so that learning can become something students and educators can embrace, and which will enable them to become solutionaries for a healthier world for all.
This book explains the difference between teaching the old way (the way things are taught now), and a newer way so that students become "Solutionaries," prepared for the world around them. This can be done by incorporating science, math, reading, research, history, etc. in the within the framework of research. There are lots of examples for teaching "Solutionaries." It is an excellent book and if you want to read something quite doable to change our educational system, get this book.
Book arrived quickly and in very good condition. And, this must be said, the book looks cheesy as heck, but it's actually really good. It was a textbook for my class and I was very suspicious, but I've enjoyed reading it so far and I highly recommend it.
This book is so important for educators to read. It asks us to rethink or old goal of producing graduates who can compete in a global economy... what we need instead are people who can tackle the world’s problems and solve them solutionaries.
Zoe Weil has created a guide to the future of education that will provide our children with the skills to build a more just and humane world. Educators everywhere can use these tools to help their students become critical thinkers and to engage them in relevant and productive problem-solving. Entire schools can incorporate the ideas in this book to build on and enhance their current school models providing their classrooms with inspiration, motivation, and solutionary skills. This book, as well as others written by Zoe Weil, provide answers to a confused and failing education system in this country and around the world. Parents, teachers, and education administrators should all read this book to gain new insight into providing students with an education that can transform them and help offer them a peaceful, humane, and hopeful future.
Zoe Weil exemplifies compassion and kindness, and this book is no exception. I loved every page, and even having read her other work and being someone who tries to lead a MOGO (most good, least harm) lifestyle, I found myself nodding along and learning new ways we can each make a difference.
